From Hunting Grounds to Washington Suburbs
The Burke area has seen tremendous change over the years. Native American presence in the area dates back thousands of years. The European settlement of the area began in the 18th Century. The advent of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad in the 1840’s brought about the development of a community around the Burke Station. The Civil War brought action to the area. Though there were quieter times for the predominantly farming area after the Civil War, major changes to the area began in the mid twentieth century with the growth of the federal government and the need for more housing and government related businesses.
